Village of Segobria

Segobria is on the River Tazieu, on the eastern border of Raskot.

Alchemist's Shop

A wooden sign portraying a gem within a flask decorates the front of this shop. It resides in a round hut made mostly out of mud bricks, with a short chimney in the back, lazy wisps of smoke meandering forth. Bricks of a different composition were used to repair a hole in the wall recently, near the front door. Inside, a crude door made of bamboo separates the front shop area from a space behind. The air near the shop smells of ground plant matter. Inside, a human man with very short salt-and-pepper hair, sideburns, mustache, and beard peers at something he is grinding with a mortar and pestle.

Proprietor Celidonio Martell

Human male. Very short salt-and-pepper hair atop his head, along his sideburns, and throughout his mustache and beard. Wide-set dark eyes in a tall face.

The Blue Eel

Exterior:
This broad two-story structure has thick timber walls and a shingled roof, with a facade of decorative bamboo woven with reeds on the front. A well-worn footpath shows that many people have moved between this establishment and the upriver dock.

Above the open door is a sign declaring the place’s name in carved letters: ‘‘The Blue Eel.’’ The sign prominently features a painted version of just such a creature. Also carved into the sign are the year of its establishment and the surname of its proprietor: Lazenby.

Next to the open door is a message board of cork with a few scraps of paper tacked on. One of them is a poorly-spelled plea to find a lost dog, written in a child’s hand. Another used to be some sort of “help wanted” message, though most of it has been torn away.

Interior:
The common room of the Blue Eel is nothing special, with a few wooden tables and chairs in various states of repair scattered about. A small fireplace in the back quietly glows as it radiates a gentle heat. The faint odors of various forms of drink in the common room are overpowered by the smell of herbed bread baking in an unseen oven.

An elf with a mop of curly crimson hair mostly obscuring his pointed ears putters about behind the bar, attending to customer needs. The less-than-glamorous life of a backwater village barkeep has not sullied his alabaster skin, sparking sapphire eyes, or perfectly-plucked eyebrows very much.

A very tall and obviously athletic human woman, chestnut hair streaked with gray and braided into a single queue, stands on the far side of the common room and narrows her green eyes at those who enter. She wears a short-sleeved off-white tunic tucked into her belted green breeches, covered by knee-high dark leather jackboots.

Bartender Roven Maeral

Elf male. A mop of curly crimson hair, tips of ears barely poking out of it. Sparkling sapphire eyes under perfectly plucked eyebrows on alabaster skin.

Hashmirti Daray:

Human female. Straight chestnut hair with a few streaks of gray. Narrow and serious green eyes. Very tall and obviously athletic, regardless of her particular style of dress.

Mercenary Tayna Kether

Reiman (tiger-folk) female. Tortoise-shell fur with patches of black, red, and cream contrasts with flat gray eyes. A column of three faint diagonal scars, evenly spaced, below her left eye.

Bound for Greatness

The owners of this two-story wooden building at the foot of a road heading west clearly want to make it appear to be the most respectable vendor on the main village square. The walls are meticulously aligned, evenly stained a dark chestnut color, and even varnished to keep out the elements somewhat. Modest glass windows let some light into the lower level, but a large window looks out on the village square from the upper level, which could be an art studio or small library. The sign hanging over the bronze-banded wooden door depicts a gold-tipped calligrapher’s pen drawing an elegant line out of an ink bottle over a blank page in an opened book. A bespectacled human with curly graying hair, wearing a stained smock over his fine clothes, stands ready to assist patrons.

Proprietor Khariton Sarantouli

Human male. Curly hair hanging to his shoulders, more gray than blond at his age. Small brown eyes behind bronze- rimmed spectacles. Tall and thin, but not sickly or slight. Fine clothes covered by a smock stained with paints and inks.

Cemetery

The locals have cleared away the trees in this area to create a roughly-circular space a few dozen yards across. Among the tree stumps are a variety of markers suggesting that the dead are buried here. Some are as simple as individual sticks or tree limbs stuck into the earth. Some have built stone cairns to mark where their loved ones were buried. The more ambitious have used polished wooden planks or slabs with names artfully burned into them. Some have stone slabs set into the earth, others standing upright, and there are even one or two carved stone monuments with statuary. Regardless of how wealthy they were in life, how principled their deeds, or dastardly their schemes, they all lie equally dead under their markers. Some markers suggest that people have reserved spaces for themselves when their time comes.

DK's Catch of the Day

The sign over this stall is painted blue, with the name of the establishment lettered boldly in white: ‘‘DK's Catch of the Day.’’ The word ‘‘catch’’ is adorned with fish fins and a tail. A human woman with beady hazel eyes and brown hair gathered into pigtails smiles pleasantly over her barrels. Some barrel lids are carefully shifted to display the heads or tails of river fish within.

Despina Kudret

Human female. Brown hair of medium length pulled back into short pigtails. Beady hazel eyes with a hint of energy in a pleasant face.

Fruity Sasooli's

A garishly-colored sign proclaims that this merchant stall is named ‘‘Fruity Sasooli's.’’ A woman with pale silver hair in a glorious mess of coils, an angular face that suggests some elven ancestry, and a confident expression marked by glittering eyes of almost-ruby operates the stall. She sells almonds, peaches, apples, and a few other varieties of fruits and nuts from a couple of carts.

Zilyana Sasooli

Half-elf female. Pale silver hair in a glorious mess of coils that somehow do not tangle. Eyes that are very nearly rubies. Angular face and confident expression. Coppery skin that almost seems to glow.

The Hammer and The Furnaces

Sturdy wood and stout chains suspend a small, shiny anvil over the doorway of this squat stone building with thick walls. The heavy wooden door with a barred window is propped open during the day. Inside there is a small shop front but it is clear that most of the building is devoted to a smithy. The place smells distinctly of the burnt coals powering the forge. The footpath outside continues past the building towards some forested hills in the distance.

Inside, a half-elven man with frizzy white hair and golden eyes under severely arched eyebrows putters about, occasionally tapping at a workpiece on an anvil with a hammer. He shows it to a dwarven woman with carefully braided mahogany hair; she only briefly looks at it.

Smith Buthomar Santos

Half-elf male. Frizzy white hair. Eyes almost golden, in a broad face under arched eyebrows.

Forfin Shock

Dwarf female. Long mahogany hair carefully braided and neatly arranged atop her head. Dark brown eyes often looking tired and perhaps a bit bloodshot.

The Hearth of Quetia

The broad round building on the north side of the main village square is made of stacked stones, has a prominent chimney on the center of its bamboo roof. Four arched wooden doorways around the structure feature carvings of feathers and fishes – mostly eels. A slightly raised hearth sits at the center of the building, and the a few low flames flicker within it. Rugs and mats of various sizes and compositions are spread around the wooden floor of the broad interior hall, suggesting places where people may sit during gatherings. A modest doorway stands closed in the center of the back wall.

Brother Acorns

Vodshi (bear-folk) male, covered in shaggy brown fur. A little bit of grey around nose and mouth. Hazel eyes set deep above a relatively long snout.

Sister Myrianthe Bishara

Human female. Dark blonde hair worn loose to the shoulders. Round brown eyes in a round face.

Patients:

Yunaesa Presvalur

Mahir Manor

Largest trading concern in the village.

Tarkan Mahir

Human male. Greased dark brown hair, almost appearing black, carefully styled. Clean-shaven with a prominent nose and a permanently impatient expression.

Head of Security Elias Theric

Half-elf male. A flat top of buzzed medium blond hair. Cool and analytical brown eyes. Tattoo of some sort of animal barely visible above the collar of his shirt. Seldom outwardly happy, let alone optimistic.

Main Village Square

The main village square of Segobria is a broad and mostly flat patch of dirt with a few tufts of grass here and there, trampled by many feet of people and beasts of burden. A lonely-looking stone well stands in the rough center of the roundish square.

A well-traveled road exits the square to the north, weaving around a small brick building in the distance. A somewhat smaller road extends to the west. Adjacent to that westerly road is a two-story building of carefully stained wood with a large window on its upper floor.

Several merchant stalls stand to the southwest, selling the bounty from the river and local farms.

Buildings of various sizes and shapes stand around the perimeter of the square. On the southeast corner of the square, near a broad path leading south to a dock, stands a two-story building with a woven bamboo-and-reed facade under a shingled roof.

To the northwest, a thin stream of smoke exits the stubby chimney of a round mud hut with a sign out front. Its southerly neighbor is a building best described as a triangular log cabin pyramid.

On the north side of the square stands a broad, round building made of stacked stones with a prominent chimney in the center of its bamboo roof, and an arched doorway looking out towards the square.

A footpath exits the square to the northeast and leads to a squat stone building some ways back.

On the east side of the square sits a building of well-maintained worked stone, next to a stand of tamarisk trees, a hitching post, and a water trough for any beasts that may use it.

Presvalur's Farm

This is one of the larger farms in Segobria, but not by very much. In the space between four rectangular fields stands a typical wooden barn, unpainted, with a visible hole in the roof. The shadows inside the barn do little to conceal a donkey, an ox, and some farming equipment just inside the open barn door. A chicken coop sits next to the barn. Further along the footpath, away from the main road, a modest mud brick house with a sloped thatched roof serves as a the residence for a small family. One of the farmer’s fields has rows of cabbages, the second has peas, the third has been recently plowed and may not yet be planted, and the fourth lies fallow.

Vinald Presvalur

Elf male. Shaggy hair resembling threads of tarnished brass barely restrained behind ears. Tired eyes of dull turquoise.

The Sanctum of Sarkis

This log cabin built as a triangular pyramid boasts an equally triangular doorway at one corner, engraved with mystical symbols that gradually change color. A dwarven woman, short even by dwarven standards, presides anxiously over an organizational scheme for books, scrolls, and odd knick-knacks which presumably only she can decipher. Her fine golden hair seems to have a certain disregard for gravity.

Hailie Sarkis

Shorter than an average dwarf female, with fine golden hair that does not always obey gravity. Speaks quickly. Always at least an undercurrent of anxiety.

Shiny Sigils

A rectangular red brick building sits on the main road towards the the rest of the world, a brief walk off the main village square. The sign over its door, made of wood inlaid with silvery metal, portrays a bird in flight rising out of a gemstone. The inside is unusually well-lit and the glimmer of some of the items within can be seen from the road. Inside, a gnome with wavy evergreen hair looks cheerfully at passers-by.

Proprietor Phoenix Oktaver

Non-binary Gnome. Wavy evergreen hair of medium length, stubbornly resistant to styling. Cheerful eyes resembling pale pink opals. A splotchy red birthmark on their left temple.

Upriver Dock

Of the two sturdy-looking wooden docks that jut from Segobria into the River Tazieu, this one is further upstream, a bit longer, and looks more heavily used. The crude pilings still resemble very worn tree trunks, but they appear to be withstanding the seasons rather well. The iron cleats at various places around the perimeter of the dock are mostly rust-free. A wide dirt path at the end of the dock narrows slightly as it guides travelers to the closest building on the main village square, a broad two-story structure with a shingled roof.

Barge captain Smedley Cloven

Halfling female wearing a tri-corner hat over curly brown hair, and dark overalls over a light tunic.

Barge crewman Emanuel "Manny" Valdovinos

Tall and lanky human male, with short dark hair and rough stubble for a beard. Wears a stained shirt and trousers that may be made of sackcloth.

Fisherman Snatash Akoorias

Veiz (wolf-folk) male. Short, smooth fur with irregular areas of white, black, and rust. Expressive ears, white on the left, rust on the right. Round black spot around left eye. No visible tail.

Village Hall

The only worked stone building on the main village square stands two stories tall. Two guardsmen wearing differing clothes under tabards bearing a tree-like crest stand watch over the open front door. The largest ground-floor room visible from the square has a generously-sized west-facing window with open wooden shutters; through it, one can see a room containing a long rectangular table and a dozen or so stout wooden chairs. Another ground-floor room has a smaller window, through which a serious-looking bald half-orc man gazes out at events on the square. On the upper floor, one can see a few books stacked on a desk where a gray-haired human woman works. The other rooms on the upper floor have tiny windows barred with iron.

Burgomaster Tharzandrog Krubo

Half-orc male. Mostly bald on top, with a bit of dark hair left around the sides and back. Deep-set brown eyes that make him look like he has been recently annoyed.

Magistrate Imrozia Alcantara

Human female. Long white hair in a tight bun high on her head. A mostly cheerful face, but woeful brown eyes.

Captain of the guard Jerrold Trevisani

Human male. Dull golden hair, just long enough to appear wavy. Deep blue eyes. Full reddish beard, just long enough to hide the skin underneath, but not so long that the wind affects it.

Zimpet's Green Grocery

The words ‘‘Zimpet's Green Grocery’’ are carved into the sign over this stall, using only clear and straight lines, with a minimum of detail or advertising frippery. A gnome with unevenly-cut ginger hair and squinty brown eyes glowers as the occasional customer peruses the lettuces, summer squashes, parsnips, yams, and leeks he has put on display.

Proprietor Rophan Zimpet

Gnome male. Short ginger hair of uneven length. Squinty brown eyes.
